Headlines 1/24/07

* Israel's President, Moshe Katsav, who will likely be indicted for rape, abuse of power, obstruction of justice, fraud, sexual harassment and breach of trust, has refused to resign, saying, "I did not have sex with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky." President Katsav later also stated that he never penetrated her with a cigar. Never received a blowjob from her. And never came on her dress.

* The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 12-9 today to approve a non-binding resolution opposing President Bush’s plan to send additional forces to Iraq. The resolution states, "We the senate, who may or may not be running for president in 2008, firmly, strongly and completely, oppose any idea that President Bush might have about Iraq, other than his firing of Donald Rumsfeld. We oppose any increase of troops in Iraq because such troop increases will unnecessarily endanger the lives of American soldiers and not achieve any attainable goals in Iraq. We are so very firmly and utterly opposed to any troop increases and we express this in the strongest possible terms." The Committee then voted 21-0 to fund Bush's proposed troop increases.

* John Kerry announced today that he will be running for president in 2008. Fifteen minutes later he announced that he will not be not running for president in 2008. Kerry stated that the reason he was not running was that he wanted to spend more time with his family. He denied the allegation that polling data released during his fifteen minute candidacy had any bearing on his decision to drop out of the 2008 presidential race. According to the polling data in Iowa, Kerry has a lower approval among democrats than President Bush. Kerry also denied rumors that he is a laughingstock in the Democratic Party. Kerry later admitted that the rumors were true. Still later, he denied them again.

* Senate republicans today used a filibuster to prevent the passage of a bill raising the minimum wage. Senate republicans are demanding that tax breaks be included to offset the costs of minimum wage. Such offsets include reducing the corporate tax rate from 35% to 4%, changing the non-taxable portion of estates from $2 million to $300 billion, reducing the tax on capital gains from 15% to 2% and eliminating sales taxes on the following vehicles: Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Acura, and Lexus.

* Raleigh, North Carolina was in shock today when it was learned that DNA tests have confirmed that the prosecutor in the Duke rape case, Mike Nifong, was in fact the individual who raped the stripper at the Duke lacrosse team party. Under North Carolina ethics rules prosecutor Nifong will remain on the case.

* President Bush in his state of the union address promised to only veto 25% of democratic proposals during the next two years if they agree not to impeach him for lying to the American people about the Iraq War. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid are purportedly in negotiations with the president to reduce the percentage of vetoes to 15% in exchange for funding troop increases to Iraq.

* Lt. Gen. David H. Petraeus, President Bush’s new choice as the commander in Iraq, testified that new military strategy to secure Baghdad can work if given enough time. Gen. Petraeus estimated that it would only take 193 years, $23 trillion, and 250,000 no-bid contracts with Halliburton. He also stated that debate over the new plan emboldened the enemy even more than the completely unreasonable nature of President Bush's plan.

* Attorney General Alberto Gonzales during Senate Judiciary Committee hearings testified that the Constitution no longer applied. "The Constitution doesn't say it will still apply after 200 years. Therefore, it doesn't." Gonzales went on to testify that the First Amendment didn't apply to the President because it begins "Congress shall make no law..." and that the Fourth Amendment did not prevent the President from taking any actions during the war on terror because it states that it applies to "unreasonable searches and seizures" and that any and all searches and seizures are reasonable during the war on terror.
